Penn Station East Coast Subs

Location(s):    1603 Battleground Ave
                          Greensboro NC 27408
                          336-574-0808

                          4008 Mendenhall Oaks Pkwy
                          High Point, NC
                          336-841-0029

Cuisine:   Subs, subs and more subs!! Fresh-cut fries, cheese bread, wraps and salads, chips and cookies, and kids meals. They also serve fresh-squeezed lemonade made daily, Pepsi products and sweet tea.

Atmosphere:   All of the food is made in front of the customer so that they can see their meal being prepared. The walls are adorned with interesting artwork and of course some posters depicting their favorite subs. A television is also available to entertain you while you eat. There is ample seating in these small but quaint restaurants.

Service:   The service is what you come to expect from a fast-food restaurant. You receive a friendly greeting when you walk in and an upbeat “thank you” when you leave. After giving your order, you can stay and watch your meal being prepared or have seat and they will gladly deliver your meal to your table upon completion.

Review:   I have had the pleasure of eating at Penn Station on several occasions and my meal has always been excellent. The restaurant is clean (even the restroom) and the staff is welcoming. A visit here is not complete without trying and thoroughly enjoying the Fresh-cut French Fries! They are sliced daily and cooked to that perfect crispness that is neither greasy nor too soft, and they have that perfect texture and flavor. A MUST HAVE!! They basically have five “categories” of subs. “Classics” include Philadelphia Cheesesteak, Club and the Rueben. “Chicken” has the tasty Chicken Teriyaki, Chicken Parmesan, and Chicken Cordon Bleu. The “Italian” subs feature Pizza, Italian and Sausage subs. They also have some “Lighter Options” like Grilled Artichoke, Chicken or Tuna Salad, and Grilled Vegetarian. But, if none of these sounds like what you want, you can choose to “Create Your Own” dagwood sub where you can choose your own meats, cheeses, toppings, and condiments. I personally enjoyed the Philadelphia Cheesesteak loaded with everything they suggest. The steak and veggies are sauted together on the grill and then covered with provolone cheese which is then baked to a golden brown. This sub is absolutely fantastic as the steak, cheeses and the optional pizza sauce flavors all combine happily in your mouth. Another favorite is the Chicken Salad which is served with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. The chicken is kind of chunky and has great flavor when mixed with all of the toppings. This sub is definitely one to try if you are a fan of chicken salad (like me), and are looking for a lighter choice on the menu. A lighter choice that still leaves you satisfied! I am looking forward to trying them ALL!!

Fatz Cafe

Location:   619 S Regional Rd.
                    Greensboro NC 27409
                    336-841-0081

Cuisine:   Fatz Café has something for everyone. Steaks, ribs, chicken, seafood, pasta, salads, and daily soup choices. Pepsi products are served as well as a large array of beers and wines. They also offer Homestyle Meals on Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm for $10.99.

Atmosphere:   Fatz Café has a somewhat upscale feel, but they make everyone feel welcome and comfortable. It has a light, warm, and kind of homey feel. Great for the entire family or for that first date.

Service:   The service is fast and the service staff is attentive and warm. They are patient and they have to be, because there are so many items to choose from! An A+ rating for their excellent service.

Review:   I am always pleased with all of my visits to this restaurant. On each and every trip I was treated as if I was the only customer in the restaurant. They are always pleasant and they check back often to fill your beverage, and bring you hot and fresh “Famous Poppyseed Rolls” (you can never have enough of these little “delights“). They are known for their “World Famous Calabash Chicken”, and it definitely lives up to it’s name! It is marinated in buttermilk and then lightly breaded and cooked to perfection. It is so tasty and juicy that I almost forget that I am eating a white meat. It is served with your choice of two sides for $11.99 or you can choose a smaller version for $8.99. Their sides range from fries, baked potatoes and mashed red skin potatoes to brocoli and cheese and their wonderful Potato Soup. The Potato Soup is served everyday and they also offer two other soups daily. All of which are freshly made and delicious. Another excellent choice is the Popcorn Shrimp dinner which is served with one side, tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. The number of shrimp served is far beyond what I expected. The shrimp is lightly breaded and cooked just right. They have amazing flavor and are a light and delicious choice. Entrees can have a soup or salad added for an additional charge. Their portions are ample and the additional soup or salad is not needed to leave this restaurant satisfied! If you happen to have any room left for desert they have some delectable options. The New York Style Cheesecake is creamy and you will not know you are not in the city eating it. The Carolina Peach Cobbler is absolutely fantastic and should not be passed up on your visit to Fatz Café!!!!! Overall an A+++

Cost:   A meal for two for under $40.

L'Italiano Restaurant

Location:   219 S. Elm St.

                    Greensboro NC 27401
                    336-274-4810
Open until 3:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Closed Sunday
Limited delivery to the downtown Greensboro area

Cuisine:   Pizza, Italian entrees, sandwiches, Stromboli’s, calzones. Serving Pepsi products and bottled beers. Daily lunch specials.

Atmosphere:   From the outside you may not think much of this restaurant. It is located in historic downtown Greensboro in one of the older buildings which gives it some real character. But, the outside is not what is important here. What is important is the excellent dining experience on the inside.

Service:   I have been to L’Italiano several times and the service is always fast and friendly. They make you feel like family (or even better)!!!

Review:   I am always extremely satisfied with my meal choice at L’Italiano. I have had the pleasure of trying their pizza (a MUST have) loaded with mushrooms, pepperoni, meatballs, sausage, and more. Their pizza is excellent and is sold by the slice for $2.00 per slice, plus 50 cents for each additional topping. You can also order full pizzas with their wonderful hand tossed dough and fresh toppings. Another favorite is their freshly made Sausage Roll that is made with peppers, cheese and fresh sliced sausage. It is all made when you order and then baked to perfection. The flavor is unbelievable and the dough is light and tasty. You will enjoy all of their meals which are made when you order, and not sitting around waiting for you to order it. Their marinara sauce is homemade daily and is spectacular. Just enough spice to satisfy the palate, but not so much that it is overwhelming. Two of the pasta entrees that enjoy are the Chicken Parmesan and the Baked Ziti. The Chicken Parmesan is lightly breaded and then topped with their homemade sauce and freshly shredded cheeses. The entrée is served with a side of pasta, dinner salad, and fresh baked garlic bread. The best Chicken Parmesan I have had in the Greensboro area!!! The Baked Ziti is covered with the same homemade sauce and topped with freshly grated cheeses. Served with a dinner salad and the fresh baked garlic bread (which is melt in your mouth good). I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an excellent Italian eating experience.

Cost:   A meal for two for under $30.

East Coast Wings and Grill

Location:   1579A-B New Garden Rd
                    Greensboro, NC  27410
                    336-547-9464

Cuisine:  Wings (of course) with 75 flavors and 675 combinations to choose from.  Sandwiches, appetizers, salads, fresh wraps, quesidillas and more.  Serving Pepsi products and a nice selection of beers.

Atmosphere:   A warm and inviting decor that caters to everyone, including families.  They have a small bar area which is not the focus of this restaurant.  The focus is on great food with a friendly atmosphere.  There are also several TV's to view your favorite sporting event.

Service:   The service is always fast and friendly.  The majority of the wait staff is young and very energetic.  They strive to do their best to take care of their customers.  Always curteous and prompt with all requests.

Review:   The food is always fresh and hot and served quickly.  I have tried several dishes including the boneless and bone-in wings.  Both are equally delicious.  The hard part is deciding which sauce (or sauces) to choose for your wings.  And then the real decision comes...how HOT do you want them!!!  From mild to practicaly boiling, they have the heat to satisfy the wing eater in you.  The flavors are bold and distinct, and leave you wanting to try them all.  Their homemade chips are served with ranch dip and are outstanding (you have to try them)!  They have a variety of sandwiches, but my favorite is called "Our Own Turkey Eater" which is made with real turkey freshly sliced, swiss cheese, mayo, and served on sourdough bread.  The real turkey makes this sandwich one that you will return for again and again.  Two other favorites are the "Swiss and Mushroom Burger" and the "Colossal BLT".  Their burgers are awesome so ANY burger is an excellent choice, but the "Swiss and Mushroom Burger" has the perfect blend of flavors for the burger lover in everyone.  The "Colossal BLT" is exactly that...COLOSSAL.  You will not leave hungry or unsatisfied if you make this your choice.  The bacon is perfectly cooked (in my opinion) and it gives you that BLT taste in every bite.  Overall I would suggest this restaurant to anyone looking for a casual, relaxing place to dine with friends or family.  An A+

Cost:   A meal for two around $25.
